Informal Sector - Publications

In most countries of the Third World, the informal sector, i.e. "street craftsmen", "street vendors", as well as many informal service providers, is of an immense importance in terms of the (estimated) number of people working in that sector. Apart from an approximate number of one billion unemployed or underemployed people (ILO, 2001), the informal sector, which "employed" 500 million people as early as the mid-1990s (ICFTU, 1996), has been developing fast and increasingly strongly in the Third World.
This section deals with the problems regarding the unionization of this sector as well as development policy approaches intended to support people working in the informal sector .
